Clove Tea

Prep time5 minutes
Total time15 minutes
Servings2 cups (approx. 16 fl oz

Equipment

  • Small stainless steel saucepan or enameled pot
  • Mortar and pestle (or the flat side of a chef’s knife)
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Heat-proof glass mugs or teacups

Ingredients

Core Ingredients

  • Whole dried cloves: 1 tablespoon (approximately 10 to 12 whole cloves)
  • Filtered water: 2½ cups (extra water accounts for slight evaporation during boiling)

Optional Flavor Enhancers & Sweeteners

  • Fresh ginger root: ½-inch knob, sliced thinly (adds a zesty, anti-inflammatory punch)
  • Cinnamon stick: 1 small stick (brings sweet woody complexity)
  • Raw honey or pure maple syrup: 1 to 2 teaspoons, to taste
  • Fresh lemon juice: 1 teaspoon (brightens the earthy, pungent spice notes)
  • Black tea leaves or tea bag (optional): 1 teaspoon or 1 sachet, if you prefer a caffeinated morning chai profile

Instructions

  1. 1.Crack the Cloves: Unlocks the aromatic essential oils trapped inside the bud.
  2. Place the whole dried cloves into a mortar and pestle. Give them 2 to 3 gentle presses to crack the round flower heads and break open the stems. Do not grind them into a powder; simply fracturing the outer hull allows the hot water to extract the fragrant essential oils (primarily eugenol) without leaving fine sediment in your cup.
  3. 2.Bring Water to a Rolling Boil:
  4. Pour 2½ cups of cold, filtered water into a small saucepan. Place the pan over medium-high heat on your stovetop and bring the water to an active, rolling boil.
  5. 3.Add Spices and Adjust Heat: Prevent harsh bitterness by avoiding violent boiling.
  6. Add the lightly cracked cloves (along with the optional sliced ginger or cinnamon stick, if using). Immediately drop the stovetop intensity from high to low, allowing the liquid to settle into a steady, gentle simmer. Cover the pot with a lid to trap the volatile aromatic steam.
  7. 4.Simmer and Steep:
  8. Let the tea simmer covered for 8 to 10 minutes. The liquid will gradually shift from clear to a rich, warm honey-amber shade. If you prefer a milder infusion, remove it at 6 minutes; for a bold, throat-coating warmth, simmer for the full 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it rest undisturbed for an additional 2 minutes.
  9. 5.Strain and Garnish:
  10. Pour the hot tea through a fine-mesh strainer directly into your serving mugs to catch all whole cloves and spice fragments. Stir in raw honey, maple syrup, or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice just before drinking.
