They’re a classic indulgence, truly, perfect for any holiday gathering or just a sweet afternoon with loved ones. Ingredients
- 1 lb (about 16-20 large) fresh, ripe strawberries
- 12 oz good quality chocolate (semi-sweet, dark, milk, or white chocolate chips/bars)
- 1 teaspoon shortening or coconut oil (optional, for smoother chocolate)
- Optional toppings: finely chopped nuts, sprinkles, shredded coconut, extra melted white chocolate for drizzling
Instructions
- Step 1: Gently wash the strawberries under cool water. This part is crucial, my dear: lay them out on a clean kitchen towel and let them air dry completely, or pat them very gently. Any water will make your chocolate seize!
- Step 2: Prepare your melting station. For a double boiler: Fill a saucepan with about an inch of water and bring to a simmer. Place a heatproof bowl over the saucepan, ensuring the bottom doesn’t touch the water. Add your chocolate and shortening/coconut oil (if using) to the bowl.
- Step 3: Melt the chocolate slowly, stirring occasionally with a dry spatula, until it’s smooth and glossy. If using a microwave: Place chocolate and shortening/coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat on 50% power for 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until fully melted and smooth. Be patient, don’t rush it!
- Step 4: Once the chocolate is perfectly melted, remove it from the heat. Hold a strawberry by its green stem (the leaves are like a natural handle!). Dip it into the melted chocolate, twirling gently to coat most of the berry, leaving a little bit of red showing near the stem for that lovely contrast.
- Step 5: Lift the strawberry and gently shake off any excess chocolate back into the bowl. If you’re adding toppings, now’s the time! Roll or sprinkle them on while the chocolate is still wet.
- Step 6: Place each dipped strawberry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Once all are dipped, carefully transfer the sheet to the refrigerator to chill for at least 15-20 minutes, or until the chocolate is firm. No peeking before they’re set!
- Step 7: Serve chilled and enjoy the sweet, tender burst of flavor with every bite. These don’t last long, so share them with joy!
